The new coalition government has revealed details of its plan for energy and climate change after much speculation on compromises since an agreement between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats was reached. The plan initially states that is will use a wide reaching strategy and numerous methods to reduce emissions, decarbonise our economy and create new green jobs.

The plan also states that the government will support an increase in the EU emission target up to 30 per cent compared to 1990 levels but does not provide any further detail of the previous statement that the government would also be increasing the UK targets for renewable energy. It is expected however that an increase in energy-from-waste and marine energy is still to come with details yet to be finalised.

The government will also review the role of Ofgem who currently regulate the electricity and gas markets in the UK and plans outline the intention to reform the energy market in order to ensure supply security. The coalition document also outlines the intention to increase investment in low-carbon energy.

The document does not include any details on the previous government's plans to make sure all new homes being built are carbon neutral by 2016 but does include plans to encourage energy efficient home improvements. The money for these incentives will come from the reduction in the emissions of the government's central departments to 10%. Incentives for eco home improvements have proved popular in the past and further new incentives are set to be another boost for the double glazing industry as well as other green markets.
