Last week the Government announced the details of its new Greener Homes Strategy which aims to cut household emissions by 29 per cent by 2020. This will be accomplished through giving eco upgrades to around 7 million homes; the scheme will also create anything up to 65 thousand jobs in the green refurbishment & installation industry.
This new strategy will be implemented in stages; here is what the Government expect to achieve:
End of 2011 – 6 million homes insulated
End of 2015 – Insulate all cavity walls and all lofts
End of 2020 – Offer up to 7 million green upgrades & all homes to have smart meters
Energy & Climate Secretary, Ed Miliband, stated: “The Warm Homes, Greener Homes Strategy will remove the deterrent of upfront costs and reduce the hassle of the move to greener living. New ‘pay as you save’ green finance, a new alliance between energy companies and local authorities to help people in their communities, as well as moves to encourage landlords to stop ignoring energy wastage in their properties, will help deliver the radical transformation that’s necessary.”
The new green loans scheme couple with this new strategy is all aimed at helping the UK Goverment achieve their long term CO2 emissions & energy efficiency targets.
Another £2.5 million to invest in the production of ‘Green Show Homes’ was also announced by Housing Minister John Healey. He said, “People will be able to see firsthand what a refurbished green home is like to live in, and the new technologies they can use to improve the energy efficiency of their own homes and save money on bills.”
