A spokesman for the Green Alliance has stated that wasted energy could be used to increase renewable energy production and help the UK increase efficiency and hit targets set for 2020.
The Green Alliance spokesperson said that by producing alternative energy using the UK's waste could provide a means of creating far more renewable energy. She also added that in order to achieve this and utilise waste for energy production, higher levels of waste recycling, reuse and prevention would have to be achieved.
The report on energy from waste that was produced last week indicated that up to 50% of the renewable energy needed to hit 2020 targets could come from waste. Also, last month the Government announced the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme that aims targets businesses and organisations in order to help cut the UK's greenhouse gas emissions.
The aim of this new Government scheme is to ensure both public and private sector companies increase energy efficiency in order to reduce emissions by 34% on the level seen in 1990 by 2020. According to the study published by the Green Alliance, utilising waste as a form of renewable energy could be key to reaching this goal. However, the infrastructure to optimise waste recovery and recycling must be in place and other energy efficiency measures will need to be introduced. The Government will also continue to target energy efficiency in the home in order to hit targets so taking a look at double glazing and other green home improvements is vital.
