An eco-conscious competitor for London's mayoral crown has promised to provide free insulation for the city's green homes if she takes Ken Livingstone's place.

Starting out from the premise that a greener nation is a more affordable one, Green Party candidate Sian Berry outlined her plans to bring more people out of fuel poverty with such insulation.

Ms Berry noted on her blog that the capital has "some of the worst insulated homes in the country", with around one in 20 families living in fuel poverty.

"I think everybody needs to get insulation eventually and I think giving it away for free is a very good way of making sure we don't miss opportunities to put it in," she remarked.

"There will be no disincentives and it will make sure that everybody sorts out insulation - we stop fuel poverty and cut our carbon emissions at the same time," she added.

A growing number of people in the know have emphasised that home improvements such as insulation or double glazing not only cut utility bills and boost a house's green credentials, but also add to the value of a property.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
