People who typically take out green mortgages are highly-aware of environmental issues and are not likely to be deterred by the credit crunch.
That's according to Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, who has said that even as mortgage rates are driven higher there will be a strong market for the products due to "personal ethics".
"The type of person who is likely to make an enquiry about a green mortgage and follow that through by taking one out has slightly different priorities - they're not quite so rate driven anyway," a spokesman said.
Green mortgages reward homeowners by offering discounted rates to people who live in dwellings that have adopted energy efficient features such as insulation and renewable energy generators.
At least four lenders currently offer such products: Halifax, the Co-operative Bank, the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society and the Ecology Building Society.
