Two consumer groups have today called for more transparency over green fuel tariffs.

The National Consumer Council (NCC) and consumer watchdog energy watch have said that providers should be more explicit about the environmental benefits of tariffs marketed as 'green'.

NCC has made the call following a study of currently available green options, which found that while many consumers are happy to pay a premium for such tariffs, most of the available options don't live up to their claims.

"With consumers increasingly trying to do their bit for the environment, switching to a green tariff should be a simple way for them to make a difference. But our investigation shows that it's too easy for consumers to be confused and misled," said Lord Larry Whitty, NCC's chairman.

"They may think they are helping save the planet, but it's not clear that they are."

An alternative way to cut down on energy emissions and reduce household bills at the same time may be to install insulation in your home.
