Construction has begun on the first specially-designed eco school to be situated in the Scottish Highlands.

The £5.8 million Acharacle Primary School is located in Ardnamurchan and will open its doors to 55 pupils at the end of the year.

With energy efficiency at the core of its theme, developers have engaged the Gaia Architectural Practice in Edinburgh as the lead consultant in recognition of their expertise in sustainable construction.

Following their advice, the new building will have a strong emphasis on insulation and draft proofing and is constructed out of timber, which is actually carbon negative because of the CO2 it removes from the atmosphere during its lifespan.

"This is a landmark and exciting development," commented Councillor Bill Fernie. "It encompasses all the key elements of what the council is trying to achieve in increasing the prosperity and wellbeing of people living and working in the Highlands and aiming to create a greener and sustainable Highland Council."

Community members had previously raised concerns over drafty classrooms in the old school, prompting the council to approve redevelopment in October 2007.
