The introduction of Home Information Packs (Hips) has led a growing number of people to carry out eco-friendly home improvements, it has been claimed.

According to DIY specialist B&Q, estate agents note that more buyers are demanding features such as energy-efficient insulation and airtight windows and doors.

"The top five projects for our customers are kitchen makeovers, bathroom makeovers, installing new wooden flooring, painting rooms, and garden projects," observed a spokesperson for the retailer.

"With the arrival of Hips, we find many of our customers are now making improvements to their home's energy efficiency," she added.

Halifax's Home Improvement Survey for last year further indicated that there has been an increase in the number of people carrying out home improvements in a bid to increase their properties' worth.

A quarter of those polled by the bank admitted this was the motivation behind their home improvements, compared to just seven per cent who said the same the year before.

Research by the Energy Saving Trust suggests that the UK would be able to cut its carbon emissions by seven million tonnes if every homeowner who required more efficient installation had it installed.
