The number of Britons undertaking home improvement measures has risen by 12 per cent in the last year alone, it has been revealed.

The annual Halifax Home Improvement Survey has found that over half the population made some kind of improvement to their home over the past 12 months, with young householders becoming more interested in such changes.

The groups most active in their take-up of home improvement measures were found to by 18 to 24-year-olds and 25 to 34-year-olds, with 68 per cent of both groups making changes to their households.

Double glazing was considered to be an essential measure by 84 per cent of the market, the study showed.

"It's good to see more people citing reasons such as reducing fuel bills and increasing energy efficiency for undertaking home improvements as it shows that climate change is moving up people's agenda," commented Halifax head of mortgages Phil Jenks.

Homeowners mistakenly believe that kitchen and bathroom improvements add the most value to their properties when it is in fact the likes of loft conversions that could prove to be most profitable, it was advised earlier this month.
