The National Home Improvement Council is warning homeowners that even basic DIY jobs require careful planning or risk turning into "a very costly exercise".
Technical consultant Andrew Leech said that a lack of common sense - possibly fuelled by macho egos about the ease of home improvement work - often leads to bruised pride and lightened wallets.
"We all like to think: 'Oh, I could do that', like knock a wall down and put something up in its place," Mr Leech noted. "But it's not as easy as that."
"If you're a moderate DIY-er you want to restrict yourself to quite simple tasks such as wallpapering, painting - and don't be too adventurous."
With winter fast approaching one of the most popular home improvements is the installation of heat-trapping double glazing, but Mr Leech cautioned that only very simple insulation projects such as installing loft insulation should be attempted without professional help.
Churchill Insurance last month revealed that a fifth of homeowners have caused damage to their property by carrying out ill-conceived DIY improvements.
