The "golden rule" of home improvements is to be realistic and not attempt tasks that are better left to professionals, according to experts.

Representatives for retail outlet B&Q pointed out that it is potentially hazardous to embark on any home improvements which jeopardise the "structural ability" of a building.

"Even the most gifted amateur cannot hope to complete every task alone," observed a spokesperson for the firm.

She continued: "If a potentially dangerous task requires more skill than you can realistically offer, then do play safe and call in an expert."

The home improvements specialist concluded that health and safety concerns are not the only consideration, as "timing, budget or even the law" could make the help of a professional a wise option.

Earlier this month, representatives for consumer site what?price.co.uk noted that an increasing number of UK residents are investing in home improvements to boost the value of their properties, although they suggested that "convenience and comfort" should be as important a consideration as saleability.
