Home improvements grants to turn properties into eco homes are not being claimed in one Lancashire borough, it has been reported.

Thousands of residents over 60 are missing out on Hyndburn borough council's energy efficiency scheme because they are not being means-tested, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Applicants can claim up to £250 a year, with a maximum of £500 over three years, for home improvements such as roof insulation, double glazing, cavity wall insulation and replacement boilers.

The publication claims that so far only 640 people have applied for the scheme which has left "plenty of cash spare".

Home improvements work has been completed at 273 properties and double glazing windows have been installed in 165 homes.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe told the publication he wanted to do something for those that have enough money to get by but not enough to carry out home improvements.

"There are a lot of people missing out because they think they must be on benefits," he concluded.

Swindon council is another local authority to have offered green home improvements recently as it poured some £6.9 million into an eco revamp of more than 10,000 of its homes.

With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Visit the Safestyle website to see a range of top quality windows and doors to suit your home.
