People are spending more and more time entertaining guests at home, according to a new survey by The Future Foundation.
The consumer consultancy group found that more than half of Brits now entertain someone at their home at least once a week, with one in 20 playing the role of host every single day.
Consultancy director Nicola Austin put this down to a renewed emphasis on comfort in the home, spurred on by a 76 per cent increase in spending on home improvements over the past decade.
"The 21st century home is no longer just a box to protect us from the elements, it is a sanctuary from the stresses of modern living which we use for relaxation and entertainment."
She added: "Far from being a generation that spends all its time out on the town, we now spend more time than ever getting together at home."
And this trend looks set to continue with the latest research suggesting that spending on household goods is estimated to rise 49 per cent between now and 2020.
Home improvements such as double glazing windows can block out noise from traffic and neighbours, as well as increase light levels in your home.
