People are being advised to make home improvements to protect their outbuildings against the increased seasonal risk of arson, it has been reported.
Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service revealed that every summer it has to attend a soaring number of deliberate fires started in sheds, according to the Morpeth Herald.
The service warned that as many houses are secured against burglary through the installation of double glazing windows and burglar alarms, sheds containing "large amounts of combustible waste" are an easy target.
"We would advise everyone to ensure their sheds are securely locked and protected and also not to store large amounts of combustible waste," warden manager Ray Cunningham said.
Do not leave outhouses as an easy target for vandals and burglars, he added.
The Manchester Evening News reported this month that the installation of double glazing windows is an easy way to improve energy efficiency while saving money on bills.
