The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has emphasised the importance of having adequate home security measures in place, especially if you live in a high-crime area.
Jonathan French, ABI assistant media relations director, said that not only would visible precautions act as a deterrent to opportunistic burglars, but they could also lower your home insurance premiums.
"If you live in an area of high crime, it is a case of doing the same things that people in other areas do to ensure that your house is as secure as it possibly can be and that will be reflected in your premiums," he noted.
Among the most effective security measures are five-lever mortice deadlocks on doors and double glazing in windows, both of which significantly bolster the defences of your dwellings' most vulnerable entry points.
The ABI also recommends less obvious tactics such as installing gravel pathways, which make a noise and so can alert homeowners to the presence of unwanted intruders.
