Homeowners who shun building new kitchens or bathrooms in favour of converting their lofts are adding thousands more to the value of their home, it has been revealed.

A survey of estate agents by GE Money Home Lending has found that loft conversions, which frequently tie in with energy efficiency benefits such as insulation, were the most valuable DIY projects that homeowners could undertake.

Loft conversions added an average of £22,300, estate agents, suggested, with new kitchens and bathrooms combined adding just £13,400.

"At a time of year when many are planning to improve the value and desirability of their homes, it is important that consumers appreciate and establish DIY and renovation tasks which will add the most equity to their particular home," advised GE Money Home Lending's Giacomo Gigantiello.

Freeing up living space in lofts is now a multi-billion pound a year market, according to recent research.
