New research from house builder Redrow Homes has found that two thirds of homeowners are actively making an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of their dwellings.

The survey also found that four out of five homebuyers would be more likely to buy an eco-friendly home that incorporates energy-saving measures such as double glazing and cavity wall insulation.

Responding to questions about their current green habits, almost half (45 per cent) said they were making an effort in some areas to reduce their impact on the environment.

The most popular methods employed to lessen energy waste included buying A-rated energy-efficient appliances, using long-lasting lightbulbs and segregating recycling bins.

"The purpose of the survey was to investigate our own homeowners' attitudes to becoming more eco-friendly - to help us assess the viability of our eco-options," said Redrow marketing director Simon Bennett.

"We were very encouraged 80 per cent of people said they would be more likely to buy a home that was eco-friendly, especially as the Government has challenged all house builders to create homes with a zero carbon footprint by 2016."

Official statistics estimate that 60 per cent of all household energy consumption is used for space heating.
