Property owners have a responsibility to reduce their carbon emissions through measures such as loft insulation, the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has said.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, installing loft insulation up to 270mm thickness in all of the UK's homes would save the equivalent of 640,000 families' energy bills for a year.
As well as reducing energy bills, such a move would also benefit the environment and boost the value of homes.
NHIC consultant Andrew Leech pointed out that, contrary to popular belief, changes need not be expensive, yet just 16 per cent of properties are currently insulated to the required level.
He insisted that homeowners face a "big responsibility" and should "embrace" the possibility to reduce emissions.
"It doesn't need to cost a great deal of money to make a contribution, because simple things like insulation and upgrading your boiler and also draft-proofing a property - they are key elements that help you reduce this carbon footprint," he revealed.
The expert added that, in the not-too-distant future, homes will be sold on the basis of how efficient they are.
