New figures indicate that house prices in the UK have fallen slightly this month.
According to Rightmove.co.uk, the average asking price for a property has dropped by 0.3 per cent or £582 in December.
However, the company says that a slowdown is not behind the reduction but rather a large number of people are putting their homes up for sale in the run up to Christmas.
It is thought that those eager to sell homes before the new year are willing to drop their prices to attract buyers distracted by the festive period.
"The strength of the housing market in 2006 has exceeded everyone's expectations, and we've seen further growth this autumn, which is only slowing down now that Christmas is on the horizon," explained Miles Shipside, the commercial director of Rightmove.
"For buyers, the small fall this month may indicate that sellers will talk turkey on their prices over Christmas."
The average asking price on a home this month is £221,751.
