Two new eco-build guides have been published by Sustainable Homes Ltd, a leading environmental development consultancy firm.
One of the guides - EcoHomes XB - outlines the different measures that homeowners can take to improve the energy efficiency of existing dwellings, while the other is targeted at commercial interest looking to approach large-scale new developments from an environmentally-conscious perspective.
Both guides have been commissioned by the government's Housing Corporation agency as part of its Innovation and Good Practice Programme. Recommended measures are expected to focus on heat retention and other energy-saving practises.
"This is quite a pivotal moment," said Andrew Eagles, head of Sustainable Homes Ltd. He noted that his organisation "has already noticed a rise in interest in reducing the environmental damage of existing buildings, and it is likely that this interest will soon become the mainstream".
He added: "There is no doubt that everybody - from housing associations managing large numbers of properties, to residents renting the properties - will in the near future be learning how to refurbish existing homes to reduce environmental impacts."
Double glazing insulation is widely recognised as being one of the most effective ways of cutting energy waste in private homes.
