Communities and Local Government has released figures for housing starts and completions, revealing that the number of new build commencements fell by eight per cent to 168,800 in the year to June 2007 compared to the previous 12-month period.

This is down from the previous high of 184,900 starts recorded in 2005-06.

However there has been a two per cent increase in the number of completions to 168,200, according to the government figures.

Over the long-term, from 2000-01 to the year up to June 2007, starts and completions have increased in England by 19 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.

Housing supply is becoming an increasingly severe problem in the UK and a report from the Social Market Foundation (SMF) claimed today that the government will have to start building on greenfield sites and the green belt if it is to meet its target of three million new homes by 2020.

Ann Rossiter, director of the SMF, said: "Even if we built on all brownfield sites, including gardens and parks in our towns and cities, we would not be able to meet housing demand. So we will need to build significant numbers of houses on greenfield and green belt sites."
