An innovative new insulation project promises to keep Welsh homes warm as well as boost the country's manufacturing industry.

Originally mooted for Ireland, the scheme will see the wool of Welsh sheep bonded with low-melt polyester to produce the highly efficient building insulation material, reports the North Wales Daily Post.

"This new enterprise will have a two-fold economic benefit because it has the potential to create a much-needed new market for Welsh wool as well as manufacturing jobs," Ieuan Wyn Jones, the Welsh Assembly's deputy first minister, told the newspaper.

He explained that the insulation project, supported by a grant from leaders, will benefit Welsh hill farmers as they have experienced poor demand and low prices for wool.

According to Mr Wyn Jones, the insulation efficiency of mountain sheep wool can be superior to that of man-made insulation, providing "excellent" protection from noise pollution in addition to its thermal benefits.

Planet-conscious residents across the pond have also been trying out innovative insulation methods this year, with one Florida couple turning to soy-based foam as it provides "more bang for the buck".
