Environmental groups are drawing attention to the substantial financial savings that homeowners can enjoy by investing in insulation.

The most common method of cutting down energy waste is to install double glazing, saving the average household up to £90 each year, according to the environmental agency Energy Saving Trust.

Double glazing will also cut out noise pollution from street traffic and neighbours, as well as increasing home security by bolstering a dwelling's most vulnerable entry points.

The next step is to install loft insulation, which acts like a blanket trapping heat rising from the house below. This can save homeowners up to £110 annually.

A further average saving of £90 each year can be achieved by installing cavity wall insulation, which fills in the gaps between a home's two layers of external walls.

And finally some DIY floor insulation can reduce heat loss through floorboards and skirtingboards, saving up to £60 annually.

The government has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2010, and is seeking a 60 per cent reduction by 2050.
