Renewable energy sources play a smaller role than improved insulation and other energy efficiency measures when it comes to fighting climate change, it has been suggested.

Talking to financial publication Interactive Investor, Jupiter Green investment trust's Charlie Thomas singled out the energy-saving properties of insulation as a key component in meeting European targets to cut carbon emissions.

"Renewal is only 20 per cent of the solution," the manager remarked.

"The other 80 per cent will be met by energy efficiency, whether that is improvements in insulation, cars, power stations or electricity on the grid."

He went on to praise the efforts of insulation providers who have demonstrated their commitment to boosting energy efficiency in the nation's homes.

Eco-campaigners called on the chancellor this week to consider implementing a low-carbon green homes programme which would provide improved insulation for fuel-poor families across the UK.

Representatives for Friends of the Earth urged the government to tax energy companies' profits and invest the money in 'super' insulation for houses struggling to pay heating bills.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
