Improved insulation and replacement windows could play a part in eco makeovers encouraged for commercial buildings by a group of MPs, it has emerged.

The all-party Urban Development Group has summarised plans to investigate how existing business can work towards becoming more environmentally friendly.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme this week, the group's chair, Clive Betts, explained that it would be questioning green experts on how commercial buildings' carbon emissions can be reduced.

He said: "Business has a responsibility to our society, to the environment, so we'll be asking business leaders as well today what they intend to do – what plan of action they've got."

The action businesses could take for existing properties might include replacement windows and doors or roof insulation – eco friendly methods that are becoming the norm in new buildings.

Former mayor Ken Livingstone announced plans to cut London's carbon emissions earlier this year when he unveiled a strategy to improve insulation in the capital's public buildings.
