Improving insulation and installing double glazing are two of the key measures recommended for property owners to achieve eco homes through DIY work, it has emerged.

Home improvements suggested in an article by the Times newspaper include the fitting of double glazing by professionals, which will typically result in saving 50 per cent of heat lost from homes.

Insulation experts accredited with the energy saving recommended logo should be used by property owners to insure that their home improvements are effectively installed, the article noted.

Draft-proofing through self-adhesive foam strips, rubber strips and brush strips are reportedly available for around £85 and are useful for eco homes, but some ventilation is required to prevent humidity building up inside the property.

Loft insulation is also recommended by the news provider as it will provide some converted green homes with energy bills reduced by up to a third in value.

But using professionals for loft insulation is recommended, otherwise less effective DIY work will mean homeowners could be paying to heat up the environment rather than their homes, commented Neil Marshall, chief executive of the National Insulation Association.

Safestyle UK are one of the few double glazing companies in the UK to supply Energy Efficiency-certified products as standard. Visit the Safestyle site to find out how Safestyle products are helping save the environment and your pocket!
