Experts have singled out insulation as being the home improvement that prospective homeowners look for most in new property.
A recent survey by Halifax found that green issues are high on the list of people's priorities when moving home, with 63 per cent of respondents wanting environmentally-friendly features in their dwelling.
According to Andrew Leech of the National Home Improvement Council, insulation probably has "the best payback factor of all, because you not only save on the energy it helps you save, but you also increase the value of the property".
He added: "You have to have your home up to a certain standard of insulation, and if you don't, when it comes to selling the place you're going to lose out."
Insulation is especially sought after because of its dual benefit of protecting the environment and saving money on energy bills.
The Energy Saving Trust estimates that the average household can save £90 each year by investing in double glazing, while cutting annual CO2 emission by 740 kg.
Over 13 million homes in the UK currently have inadequate insulation, according to an estimate by the National Insulation Association.
