Around one million Irish homes have poor insulation, making them energy-inefficient and lumbering residents with high energy bills, it has emerged.

Research by the Renewable Energy Skills Accel Project (RES) has revealed that many homes built before 1997 are costing their owners millions of Euros each year in unnecessary heating bills because of a lack of double glazing and home insulation.

"The introduction of environmentally sound construction methods and materials in the building of new homes is being undermined by the fact that approximately two thirds of existing Irish homes remain poorly insulated and are, therefore, neither energy-efficient nor environmentally-friendly," said Johnny Flynn, chairman of the RES.

Mr Flynn said that these homes are practically impossible to heat, leaving vulnerable people with health problems and huge fuel bills.

"Apart from reducing fuel and electricity bills, a more energy-efficient home helps to protect the environment and provide greater protection for householders against future increases in fuel costs, as well as making the use of renewable energy technologies a more practical option," he added.

Adding double glazing to your property is an inexpensive way of boosting your insulation and reducing your energy bills.
