Lancashire residents are being advised to stay healthy during the winter months by ensuring their homes are properly insulated.
The Lancashire Evening Telegraph reported that Pendle Council has started distributing free thermometers and is launching an awareness campaign that encourages residents to request advice about energy-efficient technologies.
Elderly people in particular are being reminded that health problems can be exacerbated by cold weather, leaving them with weakened immune systems that are more susceptible to potentially-fatal infections such as pneumonia.
The local authority therefore announced it would be offering grants and discounts for people wishing to improve their domestic insulation, which can upgraded through cavity wall and loft insulation as well as double glazing.
Insulation minimises heat loss in properties, thereby allowing homeowners to lower their energy bills as well as reduce their carbon footprint.
Official government statistics reveal that some 60 per cent of household energy consumption is attributed to space heating.
