Work on the final phase of a rennovation programme of the Angus Housing Association's (AHA) sheltered housing stock is well underway. The programme will take the total spend on just over 100 houses at three locations in Arbroath to more than £4 million. Part of this investiment will be made towards making these homes more eco-friendly by using technologies such as UPVC windows.

The latest phase of the works has started. These works consist in the installation of new heating systems and kitchens to 68 houses, new external doors and new UPVC windows to 28 houses, new controlled entry to 32 houses and a state-of-the-art fire and warden alarm call system to 102 houses at Abbot Street, Russell Square and Leonard Street.

The main contractor on this final £850,000 phase, Forman Construction, Dundee, will complete the conversion and integration of the last remaining, original, bedsit flats into one and two-bedroomed accommodation. These properties will be fitted with the latest energy efficient technology such as eco-friendly wall insulation and UPVC windows.

Since becoming the landlord in 1997, AHA has invested heavily in the homes to secure their long term future with all the properties now having UPVC windows, modern heating systems and other improved facilities. A new community lounge was built at Russell Square and the lounge at Abbot Street has been extensively re-furbished.

AHA director, Bruce Forbes, said: "Since we took over ownership of these houses, we have been fully aware of the need to invest in them to secure their long term future. This latest phase will complete a huge programme of work such as UPVC windows in order to make these houses more energy efficient."
