Latest Insulation News

While owning an older property may sound appealing to house buyers due to its appearance, the reality is that not all of them are well insulated, and are frequently cold and draughty during the long winter months.

In an article written to the Daily Mail by Natalie Gameson, many of these older homes lack double glazing or sufficient insulation to keep them warm during winter. An additional barrier is planning restrictions which can make it difficult to add these fixtures.

Because of this, modern homes are becoming ever popular with buyers as all the required fixtures and fittings are already in place. Despite this, there are plenty of ways to improve central heating systems in older houses that do not require planning permission, or having to make drastic changes to your house.

There is plenty of help available too; Mrs Gameson recommended that people looking to improve their home’s energy efficiency and insulation should investigate the government’s Warm Front and boiler scrappage schemes. These schemes help to provide funding towards the cost of improving central heating systems, insulation and also provide advice on how to make your home more energy efficient.

There also much cheaper alternatives when trying to keep warm. Savills’ interior designer Simon Buhl Davis has recommended that even burning candles and seeing a flame will help you to automatically feel warmer. Real flame gas fires are also a quick fix as long as you have a gas supply.

The Energy Saving Trust has also recommended that when buying an older home, that the buyers should check the age of the boiler currently being used, as if it is more than a decade old it could need replacing.
