An insurance company has warned householders to be on their guard for fire hazards over Christmas.

According to Lloyds TSB, the festive season often leads to a surge in domestic fires, as decorations and celebrations increase the risk of disaster.

Faulty fairy lights and unattended candles are particular problems to watch out for, as a recent survey reveals that many Brits do not take adequate precautions to minimise the risks of fire.

"If there's one clear and present danger this Christmas, it is fire," said Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance.

"Come the December 25th it seems that most of us forget the basics of home safety and in doing so we're putting ourselves in real danger.

"Whether you're putting up the decorations or preparing the Christmas lunch it's important to take extra care at this time of year. We're expecting a huge rise in the number of domestic fires, but, there is still time to avoid becoming a statistic," he added.

Many people find that they feel better prepared for the event of fire with windows that can be used as fire exits.
