Just 2.3 million adults are living in their dream homes, with many unhappy with the state of the properties in which they live, it has been claimed.

Research from Alliance & Leicester has found that many Britons are now so keen to get onto the property ladder that they forego high-quality homes and settle for whatever they can find.

"It seems people are happy to move into a property that isn't their ideal, in order to move up the property ladder and reap the benefit of rising house prices," commented Alliance & Leicester's director of mortgages Stephen Leonard.

The study also indicated that an increasing number of householders see their homes as an investment opportunity rather than somewhere with which they have an emotional attachment.

Improvements such as loft conversions are among the most valuable changes homeowners can make to their properties, it was advised last month. A separate survey published in June revealed that Britons believe an average of £5,000 can be added to the value of their houses via home improvements.
