House prices in England and Wales have increased by one of the highest annual margins of the past two years, according to the Land Registry.
In April this year, the average price of a home reached £179,935, representing an increase of 9.1 per cent on 12 months ago and pushing the index to 218.8.
The figures also show a month-on-month increase of 0.6 per cent in April. House prices in England and March were £178,423 on average.
According to the index, the counties with the highest annual price change were Greater London and Brighton and Hove, which both witnessed an average increase of 15.6 per cent.
The news follows figures released by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors which show that 28.9 per cent more chartered surveyors reported an increase in house prices rather than a fall in April, compared to 26.9 per cent in March.
