Spiralling property prices in London are forcing many of the capital's residents to move to cheaper parts of the country, figures from the Office of National Statistics suggest.

People are currently leaving the capital at a rate of 20,000 each month, according to data gleaned between June 2005 and June 2006.

Many of those leaving are being driven out as they come to realise they cannot afford a mortgage, while others are simply choosing to cash in on the property boom.

"We have seen a very active housing market and some people are moving out to take advantage of the rising prices," statistician Karen Dunnell told the Guardian.

She added that "London has always been a huge magnet for people and jobs, but people are moving about".

The worst affected borough was Newham - which saw a net loss of nearly 10,000 people - while Ealing, Brent and Lambeth all saw reductions of over 5,000.

Despite the exodus, London's official population rose over the same period, with immigration and birth rates increasing the total number of residents by 56,000 to over 7.5 million.
