Improved insulation is one of the many green adjustments to be made to London's public buildings as part of a strategy unveiled by the city's mayor this week.

Ken Livingstone laid out plans to cut carbon emissions in the capital by enlisting the advice of a number of firms in relation to energy-saving improvements such as insulation, low-carbon heating and building management technology.

Mr Livingstone explained that much of London's - and other major cities' - public building stock currently has inadequate insulation and uses older, energy-inefficient technology to heat and cool it.

"As nearly three-quarters of damaging carbon emissions come from energy use in buildings, improving energy efficiency is probably the single most important thing that we can do to cut carbon emissions," he remarked.

Climate-savvy firms such as Dalkia and Honeywell are to carry out 'energy audits' of the capital's buildings as part of the drive, with Canary Wharf already one step ahead in assessing its buildings' green potential and capacity for the latest environmental technology.
