The mayor of London Ken Livingstone and British Gas have put back the deadline by which people must submit their applications to have cut-price insulation installed in their homes.

In March, Mr Livingstone made the offer available to residents in the capital as part of his Climate Change Action Plan.

Previously, the deadline was June 1st – the date after which homeowners looking to sell their property will be required to have a home information pack.

In this pack is an energy performance certificate, under which each house will be given an energy rating.

The mayor and British Gas have agreed to prolong the time in which people can apply for assistance with insulation costs until July 1st.

"The new requirement for home buyer packs will enable homebuyers to choose 'green' when they are looking for a house," said Mr Livingstone.

"Our surveys show that over 82 per cent of Londoners are now concerned about climate change and many want to cut their own carbon emissions."

The news comes after the Warm Front scheme in Bolton revealed that more than 36,000 people in the city who may be eligible for energy-efficient grants have not claimed them.

Another way to make a home warmer and more energy-efficient is to invest in double glazing.
