A London MEP has called for a new programme to promote the benefits of housing insulation as part of a drive to combat climate change.
Speaking earlier this week on Environment Day, Green MEP Jean Lambert said that local changes could have a wider global impact, and that domestic emissions were a main priority.
A lack of efficient insulation meant that such emissions are currently more damaging to the environment than those produced by ground transport, Ms Lambert advised.
"Our homes and are a good place to start in the battle to protect the environment. We still have over ten million UK homes with un-insulated cavity walls, losing over one third of their heating - resulting in higher costs for householders and the planet," the MEP commented.
There are 'easy wins' that could make a big difference in the battle against climate change, an effective insulation programme is one of them. What is lacking, but clearly needed, is a greater and more focused government commitment to push this agenda forward," she added.
Private homes are lagging behind their social housing counterparts when it comes to adequate loft insulation, it was advised earlier this week.
