Mortgage lender Norwich & Peterborough is running a competition offering a cash prize of £5,000 to the entrant who build the most innovative eco-home.
The contest, now in its sixth year, is open to all homeowners and aims to highlight and reward the efforts of green homeowners who undertake eco self-build projects in order to reduce the carbon footprint of their homes.
N&P managing director Richard Lloyd said: "The diversity and standard of entries last year was exceptional, proving that eco-building is developing beyond a purist lifestyle choice to a real alternative to the traditional brick and block self-build."
He commended last year's winner, a family from East Sussex with eight children, who undertook the task of building their modern home on top of a disused brownfield site.
Entries are expected to include tried-and-tested energy-saving measures such as double glazing insulation, as well as some quirkier design tweaks such as bio-gas energy production.
Official government statistics show that 27 per cent of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions come from private homes.
