One group specialising in Home Information Packs (Hips) has stated that the "vast majority" of UK homes are scoring poorly on energy-efficiency ratings.

The comments from the Partnership group reinforce the findings of a recent survey that suggested the average UK property received an 'E' grade in the Energy Performance Certificates that are bundled with Hips.

"The vast majority of houses are coming out at the bottom end of the scale," said the spokesman, adding that even his group's best houses were scoring just a 'C' rating.

Commenting on the negative impact that a poor energy rating can have the on the marketability of a property, the spokesman said: "There is definitely a feeling that you don't want to have a bad grade."

He added, however, that concerned homeowners can take a number of measures to increase the energy-efficiency of their dwelling.

"The most obvious thing is looking at the insulation, whether it's in the windows, double glazing or in the walls," the spokesman advised.

Purchasing a Hip is now compulsory for anyone selling a UK property with three or more bedrooms.
