Installing low-voltage lighting in your front and back gardens is a sound way of increasing home security, experts say.
Burglars prefer to work under the cover of darkness, so installing motion-sensor lighting around your home's pathways, doors and garages will serve as a deterrent to any would-be intruders lurking outside.
A wide range of such lighting options are available, most of which draw from low-voltage power sources and will only switch on when movement is detected around your property's perimeters - so energy waste need not be a concern.
Such devices also typically allow for adjustments to the field of activation, meaning the motion sensor's field of vision can be tailored to your specific property.
The official website of the Metropolitan police cautions, however, that exterior lighting is just one facet of home security and "on its own it is not sufficient to deter a burglar".
Other security measures homeowners are advised to take include installing double glazing in doors and windows to reinforce vulnerable entry points.
Britain has the highest levels of burglaries of anywhere in Europe, with a total of 733,000 dwelling's being broken into over a 12 month period in 2005/6.
