Now in its sixth year, National Home Security Week is once again running from August 25th to August 31st.
The programme aims to highlight simple security measures that all homeowners should consider taking to ward off burglars.
In North Yorkshire police community support officers will be getting involved, going door to door dispensing advice to residents on the best ways to safeguard their property.
Recommendations are likely to include removing valuables such as wallets and laptops from view of windows, bolstering security by installing double glazing and installing light timers and shed alarms.
Such home security measures are especially vital during the summer holidays, when many people leave their homes unguarded for prolonged periods while abroad.
Britain has the highest incidence of home burglaries in Europe, with 733,000 dwellings reportedly broken into over a 12 month period in 2005/6, according to Home Office statistics.
But even that figure is less than half what the levels used to be during their peak in the mid-nineties, and home security experts attribute the falling crime rate to greater vigilance among homeowners.
