Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council has recognised the importance of effective insulation in homes and has launched a new scheme to transform the town's council houses.
Investment worth £55 million has been pledged to improve nearly 10,000 homes by March 2008, bringing the properties up to the government's Decent Homes standard.
This requires properties to be in a reasonable state of repair and to have effective insulation and efficient heating.
According to the Press Association, all 22,000 of Doncaster's council houses will be fitted with double glazing by 2015, and properties will also have improved external windows and doors to ensure security.
Deputy mayor Margaret Ward said that the investment would take thousands of tenants' homes beyond the government standard.
"As well as an investment into individual homes, this is a huge boost for Doncaster as hundreds of local jobs will be created by the work," she added.
