A new environmentally-friendly housing scheme has been completed in Guildford, comprising three large family homes with a number of energy-efficient features.

The homes, which have been let to local families, should enable residents to enjoy cheaper fuel bills as they benefit from modern insulation, solar water heating, and a heat recovery system that means they do not require heating upstairs.

Councillor Andrew French, Guildford's lead councillor for housing, told the Green Building Press that the innovative development in Slyfield was a good example of the way in which the council works with housing associations and partner organisations to create affordable housing with a minimal environmental impact.

"These homes have been built following a special design to achieve full eco-homes and lifetime homes standard.

"The eco-homes' 'excellent' rating means fuel bills will be reduced and the development will have a positive effect on the environment," he added.

Gordon Brown has confirmed that house-building will be a priority for his government and has unveiled plans to build three million new homes by 2020.
