Winchester City Council has completed a trial scheme involving the construction of six new affordable eco homes.
Developer Atlantic Housing Ltd erected the groundbreaking low carbon homes, each of which deploys the latest green technologies in order to lower their carbon footprints.
Among the key measures put in place are extensive insulating features such as double glazing and cavity wall and roof insulation - all of which cut energy waste by minimising heat loss.
Other carbon offsetting measures include the planting of numerous CO2-emitting trees around the estate and the provision of cycle storage to encourage eco-friendly transport by local residents.
Winchester councillor Tony Coates said that his local authority was only too happy to support nation-wide efforts by the government to step up the production of eco friendly housing - part of a drive to lower national carbon emissions 60 per cent by 2050.
"The city council is very proud to be part of a project like this," Mr Coates affirmed. "Opinions about climate change may be varied, but I'm sure everyone will agree that producing new affordable homes in this environmentally responsible way can only be a good thing."
