A German manufacturer has come up with a design for eco homes which actually generate more energy than they consume.

Using a combination of state-of-the-art insulation, ground-source energy and photovoltaic cells, WeberHaus's eco homes are believed to be the first of their kind in the UK.

Buildingtalk reports that the houses are constructed predominantly with wood, as it is "versatile, durable and renewable".

"The unique method of manufacture ensures millimetre precision, and no energy is lost through poor insulation or construction faults," the publication continued.

With 30-centimetre thick walls, heat is intended to remain inside the eco homes during the winter, while the renewable heat sources will ensure the buildings are kept cool during summer periods.

Earlier this year, a spokesperson for WeberHaus noted that the houses' "precision-engineered walls" not only provide superior insulation, but also offer "excellent" protection from noise pollution and fire risks.

Visitors to London's EcoBuild exhibition earlier this month witnessed more of the UK's up-and-coming 'zero-carbon' eco homes.

Featuring 'super' levels of insulation, ruralZED's designs are said to meet the top level of the government's code for sustainable buildings, with which all new houses must comply from 2016.
