The Green Building Council (GBC) has announced plans for a new sustainable buildings code to underline the various independent green homes guidelines already in place.
According to the GBC it will launch a taskforce to work with different industry bodies and organisations to develop the Code for Sustainable Buildings, which aims to help the sector meet the government's target of making all new non-domestic buildings zero-carbon by 2019.
John Alker, the GBC public affairs manager, said the code would go further and address issues such as water use, waste generation as well as carbon emissions.
"We expect the code to have core outcomes that could be used in other sets of guidelines. For example, metrics such as CO2 or energy per metre squared could be used in various green building rating tools," he added.
Last week the Federation of Master Builders claimed home improvements and green homes could be worth up to £6.5 billion to the industry in the coming years.
