The first stages of the redevelopment of Hatfield Town centre are nearing completion and the local borough council gathered to celebrate the occasion last week.

The £80 million development will provide 84 affordable new homes for Hatfield residents, all of which have been designed with the environment firmly in mind.

Designed by PRP architects and built by Mansell PLC, the homes benefit from high levels of insulation, and all will meet the 'very good' eco-homes rating.

Commenting on the development, councillor Roger Trigg, executive member for housing for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, said that he was "delighted" that the first homes were nearing completion.

"Properties in the borough are very much in demand and over the next three years the council plans to build 800 more homes with our partners," he revealed.

Councillor Trigg pointed out that the Housing Corporation had recognised the scheme as "an exemplar regeneration project".

The Housing Corporation - the government agency responsible for investing in new affordable homes - will fund 84,000 homes between 2006 and 2008 through its biggest ever investment programme of £3.9 billion.
