Better insulation and double glazing windows are better ways to 'green' a house than some of the more publicised "sexy" renewable methods, according to one architect.

Talking to the Associated Press, housing expert John Connell emphasised that installations such as wind turbines and solar panels can do very little if basics like insulating windows and doors against heat loss have not been done.

"None of the more sexy energy-saving installations - small windmills on the roof, photovoltaic panels, solar-water collectors - make any sense until you've done your insulation, weatherstripping and other fundamentals," he remarked.

The architect went on to note that a large number of housing professionals have voiced their agreement regarding the energy-saving qualities of insulation.

Furthermore, he pointed out that it is just one of a number of "easy, immediate" ways for homeowners to boost their green credentials.

Mr Connell advised regular servicing of appliances including boilers, air conditioning units, furnaces and clothes dryers as other ways to save both money and the environment.

The Energy Saving Trust recently echoed the architect's comments, recommending that people consider installing a hot water tank jacket to make savings of around £20 a year.

With Energy Efficiency windows supplied as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Visit the Safestyle website to see a range of top quality double glazed uPVC windows to suit your home.
