Those looking to make green home improvements may be able to take out a new mortgage to finance the move.
Ulster Bank is offering a Solar Mortgage for people who have installed solar power technology in their homes.
Derek Wilson, head of mortgages at Ulster Bank, said that the move would make installing solar panels "much more affordable" and "cost effective".
It will also ensure that such work on green homes is carried out by a "pre-approved, high-quality supplier and installer", he added.
While solar panels and other microgeneration technologies may help to reduce carbon emissions, one expert believes that insulation may be one of the most "cost effective ways" of reducing fuel bills.
John Slaughter, director of external affairs for the Home Builders Federation, said: "When you look at loft insulation and cavity wall insulation, you're dealing with the whole fabric of the building, and I think that's much more important in terms of the contribution it makes."
Looking at "gaps around doors and windows" will also help to reduce energy waste, the expert suggested.
Double glazing windows and doors can increase the value of your property, as well as svaing you money on your heating bills. Take a look at some of the Energy Efficiency-certifed windows and doors on the Safestyle website.
